Abstract

Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the occurrence of depression in patients diagnosed with cancer undergoing treatment and monitoring the disease in a city in the interior of Minas Gerais.

Method: descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. Two instruments were used for data collection, a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Major Depression Inventory.

Results: the majority of the sample (54.5%) was made up of women. Among the most prevalent predictors in the Major Depression Inventory instrument, the following stand out: sadness (21.2%), lack of energy (15.1%), lack of self-confidence, discouragement and difficulty sleeping, which affected 15.1% of participants .

Conclusion: due to the scarcity of research focused on this area studied, we had difficulty in the discursive process, and the importance of new studies to provide information, notes and guidelines for evaluating the intensity of depression in these patients in order to provide adequate diagnoses and treatments is evident.
