Abstract

Research on the effects of UV radiation on plants lacks definitive conclusions, highlighting the need for further studies. This project arises in response to the demand for a photoprotective product, aiming to mitigate the impacts of increasing temperatures and climate adversities faced by growers. The objective is to evaluate the effect of carrot extract on the growth of tomato seedlings exposed to UV light under controlled conditions. The experiment was conducted at the Biotechnology and Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory of IFSULDEMINAS, Muzambinho Campus, from December 2021 to September 2022. Commercial seeds of the Santa Adélia variety were utilized. Treatments consisted of different concentrations of carrot extract, with a completely randomized experimental design, six treatments, and ten replications. After 60 days of UV radiation exposure, seedlings were assessed for growth. Statistical analyses were performed using the Sisvar software, with data subjected to ANOVA and means compared using the Scott-Knott test at a 5% probability level. Concentrations of 25% and 75% of carrot extract exhibited greater accumulation of fresh biomass in tomato seedlings. Although it did not significantly influence the number of leaves or plant height, the extract proved to be a viable alternative for increasing fresh biomass, mitigating the oxidative effects of UV light on the photosynthetic process. Future studies are necessary to determine the optimal concentration and timing for extract application, aiming to enhance its efficacy in protecting plants cultivated under UV radiation-induced stress.
